GG Allin - The Troubled Troubadour 7" + Layin' Up With Linda 7"

Bet you thought we were going to make it through a whole month without GG, didn't you? No such luck because, yes, GG Allin dabbled in country as well. Here's a couple 7"s, the first from 1990 and the second from 1993 backed by the Carolina Shitkickers (ANTiSEEN in disguise).

Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper - Bo-Day-Shus!!!

Now you know we can't have a southern fried month without including the clown prince's of punkabilly. Mojo and Skid got together in the early 80's and for the remainder of the decade made some beautifully ridiculous music together. This is the duo's 1987 release.

Outbred Inlaws - Tears Run Off Leather

I said at the beginning of this month that we're American by birth. Today we're gonna stretch that to North American. Two good ol' boys (and one good ol' gal) from Toronto put together quite a unique combination of country and punk. All with a damn fine sense of humor as well.

Cocknoose - White Trash Messiahs

Full disclosure, for some unknown reason I wasn't going to include Cocknoose this month. But, 'Harder' brought it up and dammit, they belong just as much as anyone. The pride of Lawrence, Kansas. This is their last full length release and my favorite. Sadly, we lost their great vocalist Commander P.P. Urino in 2013, so I'm guessing there will be no reunion. Bass heavy scum punk, the way yo mama likes it! Git yoself sum!

Conquerer Worm - Ride-On

Now, I gotta be honest with you. I was never familiar with Simon Stokes along the way. But apparently, in certain circles he was/is the shit. And one of those circles has a ring of scum around it. Conquerer Worm is a scum rock supergroup paying tribute to Simon Stokes. and his lengthy career. This is a damned enjoyable release.

Polecat Boogie Revival - Self-Titled

After the initial demise of Hellstomper, lead singer Alan The Goddamn King formed this band of southern gentlemen. A little less "punky-tonk" and a little more "southern boogie". Quite the ode to Black Oak Arkansas, really. And oddly, the initials of the band ended up PBR. I'm sure that was an accident, right?

Hellstomper - The Real Hillbilly Motherfucker

Now it's time to get down and dirty. I mean deep down in the Georgia mud. Hellstomper originally started in 1994. Although laid to rest in 2004 they've been born again in recent years. I believe they call their unique southern sound as 'punky-tonk'. Call it what you want, but I'd make sure to be on their side when the shit starts goin' down on a Saturday night. This is the 2005 re-issue of their 2000 classic. Does anyone happen to have their 2014 Live album?

Hammerlock - Let The Bad Times Roll

Now here's a band I really like. Travis and Liza started Hammerlock in Oakland in 1995. Since then they've consistently blended rock, country and of course punk for some pretty cool tunes. This is their 2009 offering.

Before I Hang - Mississippi

We're going to spend a little time with the Confederacy of Scum now. That loose-knit band of punk rock outlaws have put out some great stuff over the years. Never heard of the CoS? Well here's what Hellstomper (we'll get to them soon enough) singer Alan The Goddamn King has to say about it:

"For some reason, all you silly little pricks with your fucked up haircuts still think that we are playing for you. You're wrong. Damn wrong. Hell, we play for rednecks, truck drivers, and white trash. Our male fans have moustaches and our female fans wear tube tops!"

We start in Mississippi, with Before I Hang. Originally formed in 1991 and still going strong today. Mean and aggressive southern hardcore.

Nine Pound Hammer - Hayseed Timebomb

It was the late 80's when a few Kentucky boys got together to put their southern twist on hardcore. They called themselves Nine Pound Hammer and lasted about a decade before exploding. Guitarist Blaine Cartwright went on to form the powerhouse Nashville Pussy, by the way. The break up proved to be fairly short lived, as they regrouped, for the good of the nation, and are still recording today. This is their 1994 release, and I think it's their best.

Nashville Pussy - Let Them Eat Pussy

Now here's a band that you MUST see live! Although their name suggests otherwise, Nashville Pussy hail from Atlanta, Ga. They came to life in the late 90's and have been a mighty force ever since. This is their 1998 full length debut. And, what it lacks in social graces it makes up for in pure, balls out southern fried punk rock!

Honky - Balls Out Inn

Let's stay in Austin, Texas today but fast forward a couple decades. Our old pal Jeff Pinkus is at it again. This time with what they refer to as 'Championship Superboogie'. Damned entertaining. I've had the pleasure of seein' them live once (so far). If you ever have the opportunity, do it!

The Hickoids - Waltz A Crossdress Texas

Austin's Hickoids call their particular kind of twang "Hard Corn". They started in '84 and ended their initial run in the early 90's. But the mid-aughts brought a new line up and new recordings. This here's their second full length release, from 1989. Yee Haw!

The Gun Club - Fire Of Love

The Gun Club was also at the forefront of the L.A. 'cowpunk' scene. This is actually the only release I've heard from the band. It is a really good listen.

Tex & The Horseheads - Self-Titled

Regarded as one of the first bands to play 'cowpunk' was LA's Tex & The Horseheads. Here's their entertaining 1984 debut. Good stuff and, am I crazy? Do I also hear perhaps a Germs influence as well?

Al Perry And The Cattle - Cattle Crossing

Back in the old days they called it 'cowpunk', among other things. Genre definitions and interpretations get weird. At any rate, this Tucson native has played his form of kinda punky tunes with a twang since the 80's. Complete with a good (and dirty) sense of humor. Enjoy this debut full length from 1985. But you might not want to go camping with him.

Social Distortion - Prison Bound

I remember when this one came out. Punk gods Social Distortion was back! But wait, they went... country?!? Nearly brought me to tears. You're punks. You're not supposed to grow or mature musically! But that was then, this is now. I get it now. And I enjoy it.

Supersuckers - Must've Been High

So, I've been considering doing this for some time now. A trip down south. Not geographically, but musically. Don't worry, I promise you the only time I'll ever write the name Toby Keith is in this very sentence! We'll still be punk. Just with some country, folk or southern influences. So this month, our blog is American By Birth, Southern By The Grace Of Whatever Non-Existent Supreme Being You Choose.

We start with the Greatest Rock N Roll Band In The World. They're not the greatest Country Band In The World yet, but they're working on it. They started in the late 80's as a punk band. The early 90's added more 'rock' elements. They in 1997 they dipped their boots in the Country pool with this release. And they've been mixing 'em all together ever since.
