Yer Mom! - In The Dungeon Demo

Our last stop this month is about 35 miles outside of Roanoke. Blacksburg is best known as the home of Virginia Tech. In the mid 80's however they were also the home of Yer Mom! A fun and entertaining band that only recorded this muddy demo tape. I personally love Yer Mom!

Ok, now before we get to the link today I'm asking for my biggest request to date. I've added a Demo tape to my want list from another Blacksburg band: Mod Dirge. I don't recall the name of it, but I do recall it being very good hardcore, with saxaphone! Came out in maybe '84 or '85. Unfortunately my copy of it didn't stand the test of time. Any chance someone out there can help with this? Please?!
BAM! Thanks Terry!!!

We May Be Weird But At Least We're Cool

Eggbert - Dern That Kudzu Demo

More Roanoke hardcore. This time with a bit more humor. They also tackle the typical punk topics: Change, Killer Noodles, and of course Kudzu. More good hardcore.

You Want A Pat On The Back, You Won't Find It Here

МИР - Mindecision Demo

We now travel to the southwestern Virginia city of Roanoke. They had a few good bands along the way. Perhaps you remember when I posted Fallout? Well here's a 1985 demo from the band МИР (pronounced "meer", it's Russian for "Peace"). These peace loving punkers put together a decent tape here. All the typical punk topics are included: First Impressions, Atrocities, and of course the senselessness of War. Good hardcore.

Chrome Daddy Disco - Demo

Late 80's Richmond also saw the birth of Psychobilly band Chrome Daddy Disco. I remember them always being entertaining live. A friend of mine sent me this Demo way back when.

They Tried To Hit Me With Their Best And I Said Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!

Mudd Helmüt - Demo '88

From our nations capital we travel some 100 miles down I-95 to the former capital of the Confederacy, Richmond, Virginia. I spent some time there in the late 80's. And that is where I discovered Mudd Helmüt. Alcohol-Powered Rock 'N' Roll. These guys truly became one of my favorite bands. Unfortunately they never had a proper release. But I was lucky enough to get my hands on this demo. You Must Listen!

We Are Muddy's Boys

Lethal Intent - Demo 1985

Lethal Intent was a mid-80's punk rock band from D.C., featuring Wendell from Iron Cross and Mike Dolfi from Black Market Baby. Unfortunately I believe this is all the evidence there is of their greatness. Four heavy tracks. The sound quality isn't great, but it's the best I've got.

The Knockdowns - Better Luck For Harder Days Demo

Remember back in the good old days? Not the 80's, not even the early 90's. We're talking late 90's here. The golden age of Napster. Before Lars decided to sue his fans and fucked it up for all of us.Well, Napster is where I stumbled upon this Portland, Oregon band. Good, working class street punk. But I haven't been able to find any more info on the band. But you should really give it a listen. It's good stuff.

Kicked Around So Fucking Hard

The Accused - 1984 Demos

Before The Accüsed presented us with "Splatter Rock", and before they included an umlaut (look it up, people!) above their 'u', they recorded a bunch of hardcore demos with their original singer John Dahlin. Here's one from 1984. Some of the quality gets quite muddy, but dammit I really like these tunes.

Everyone's Accused, And This Means You

Laffinstock - Demo + Webster University Recordings

I actually don't know anything about this band, other than they were from St. Louis. But, I found these tracks on line, I downloaded them, I like them, and here they are.

I've Been Fucked Up For Days

149 Dead Marines - Basement Demo 1984

We've had a Living Room Demo, a Garage Demo and now we have a Basement Demo. 149 Dead Marines represent midwest hardcore. Iowa to be exact. Good, tho basic, hardcore. And speaking of the midwest, there was a tape out there from 1983 I believe called "America's Dairyland". Anyone have it? I've added it to my want list because I've always wanted to hear it but never have. Thanks.

Prenatal Lust - Demo

Don't know much about this band other than the fact that they were from Texas, had a track on the great comp 'Cottage Cheese From The Lips Of Death' and recorded this Demo in 1982. Anybody have the real cover to this? Or, for that matter, ANY picture of the band?

Bad Taste

Butthole Surfers - 1982 Demos

All hail the Butthole Surfers! Here are some early recordings of the Buttholes, dated 1982. Ya know 'em, ya love 'em, ya can't get enough of 'em!!!

J.F.A. - Brian's Garage Demo

Here's a very early, and very rough demo from the great Jodie Foster's Army recorded, presumably, in drummer Brian's garage. Four great songs.

Trashing People Is So Much Fun

Feederz - Living Room Demo

So, am I the only one that thinks the Feederz were an important band? They helped keep hardcore dangerous... and crazy. Well I've always enjoyed them! Here's an ultra early demo. Simplistic brilliance.

Death Puppy - Playing Dead Demo

Here's an Oklahoma repost from May of last year. Great Demo.

N.O.T.A. may be the most known hardcore band from Oklahoma, but by no means were they the ONLY band. Death Puppy played some great snotty skate punk. This demo is from 1985. I believe they also released a 7" with a couple songs from this demo. Don't know much more about the band, tho.

Church & State, Church & State, Never Gonna Separate

N.O.T.A. - Dave Scum Demo + Outtakes

If my history is correct, for a couple years before their original break up N.O.T.A. had a different singer. His name was Dave Scum. They had no proper releases with Scum at the helm, but they did go in to the studio. Many moons ago I found that demo on a blog (I think it was the dearly departed Last Days Of Man blog). It also included a few songs with the original singer Jeff Klein. They were a great band.

Social Joke - Whole World In Their Hands Demo

From Rapid City, South Dakota comes Social Joke with a good demo. I posted Sluggo yesterday, and this is a perfect tape to follow. For any and all info on the Rapid City scene check out The Rapid City Punk Rock Archive located right here. A wealth of info and downloads.

Sluggo - Demos '84 & '85

Sluggo were four Cincinnati kids that played some really good punk rock, dammit. Their 8 song Contradiction 7" was an awesome little hardcore record, and can be found HERE. Demos recorded the following years are what I'm presenting today. They may lack a little of the energy that the 7" had, but they're still very entertaining. They would have been great follow-ups to the 7". Go HERE for more info on the band.

Hardcore from Memphis, Tennessee, y'all. Info on the band can be found here. Fun basic hardcore.

Bloody Mary - Blood Core Demo

Here's North Carolina's Bloody Mary with another handful of evil rock 'n' roll. This is their 3rd and final demo release, from 1993.

Belching Penguin - Demos 1985-1988

Florida has had a rich hardcore history. Belching Penguin fits right in. Great hardcore here. They released one LP but also had these demos laying around. At some point they were put on vinyl, and then some time later I downloaded it from a blog. And there we have it. Good band, good demo.

System Overload - Rocks Off Demo

Another Canadian repost. We'll head south with some new stuff on Friday. System Overload deliver some fast, unpolished hardcore from the Province of Nova Scotia.

I Want You To Know That I Hate You

Slow Death - Demo

Here's a tape I posted about a year and a half ago. Fast and furious straight edge thrash from Prince Edward Island.

I Don't Want To Listen To Your Heart Bleed

Direct Action - Demo 1984

From time to time this month I'll be re-posting Demos that have already appeared at some point. The links have since died and I think they're good enough for people to listen to. So we'll give them a second go. Today we're in Canada, and I'm only re-posting. We start with Ontario's Direct Action. The released one full length LP, Trapped In A World in 1985. But before that they released this demo. A great band, I think.

Youthquake - Stress Test Demo

Let's make one quick stop in Pennsylvania before heading north of the border tomorrow. Youthquake played some good Lehigh Valley Hardcore in the mid-80's. To my knowledge they only released a couple demos. Their first can be found here, and their second can be found... well, here.

The Out Group - Bleecker St. Demos

Sid Sludge fronted the great NJ band Mental Abuse. But before that he went into the studio with The Out Group. Great tunes full of sophomoric humor.

Sinn Fein - Riot Demo

I never heard of this New Jersey hardcore outfit way back then, and that's a shame. This demo rips. Great hardcore. The sound quality here is a little lacking, unfortunately. I've read there's a cleaned up version kicking around. If I find that I'll replace it.

Ha Ha Fuck You

Cyanamid - I Love NJ Demo

Damn these guys make a lot of noise! Cyanamid, fittingly named after a New Jersey chemical corporation, had a couple wild songs on the 'New Jersey's Got It?' compilation. They also had a 7" release, which I don't have but I do believe has no tracks that aren't on this demo. And, as I said before, damn these guys make a lot of noise!

Krieg Kopf - Demo

Krieg Kopf was one of the many great bands featured on the Big City comp series. I don't believe they ever had an official release of their own, tho. But here is their 7 song demo from 1986

Get Up, Get Out & Go To Work

Misguided - Alex Drops Out Demo

Let's spend this weekend in the New York metropolitan area. The Misguided played some pretty good hardcore in their time. This is a demo from late in their history. Although it's angry, it's nowhere near as 'mean' as their 1st 7".  Still it's well worth a listen.

False Confession - Demo 1983

Staying in California today we have Oxnard's own False Confession. I loved their Mystic 7" back in the day, but outside of that and some comp appearances, that was it. I'll tell you, had this demo come out as a full length back then it easily would have been one of my favorites for a long time. This is great stuff.

Black Flag - The Complete 1982 Demos + More

Black Flag. So here's a brief, and possibly wildly inaccurate, history of early 80's Flag. Dez is tired of singing and becomes rhythm guitarist. They recruit some guy named Henry to complete the vocals for the masterpiece 'Damaged'. However, an UGLY and lengthy lawsuit ensued, preventing the band from releasing anything under the Black Flag name. They skirted this by releasing 'Everything Went Black' which has lots of demo tracks from earlier in the bands history. They also continued writing and recorded a few tracks, which would remain unreleased. By 1984 Dez was gone with his 2nd guitar, and both Chuck's were gone, Dukowski with his nasty-heavy bass, and Biscuits with his historic drums. Future releases have been scrutinized ever since. However, these sessions were released some time in the 90's. They contain a couple never-before released tunes as well as several tracks that ended up on future Black Flag releases. The 'Plus More' on this version is a couple live in studio tracks and interview from 1984.

Demented Youth - Better Homes Demo

Let's stay a little weird and end the weekend with a re-post of the Demented Youth demo. And here's what I wrote last year:

If you've heard Demented Youth on the 'Not So Quiet On The Western Front' comp then you know exactly what to expect from this group of kids from San Francisco. This is loud, noisy and chaotic!

"mrmrmrmrmrmr Noise Of A Crowd"
NEW LINK!

Church Police - Demo 1982

It's Sunday so time to go to church. The Church Police were a bizarre little band that clearly worshiped at the altar of Flipper. Which isn't a bad thing. Weird and wonderful. A few years ago the guitar player had a blog with some band info. Its here if you're interested. And, full disclosure, I think they released at least one 7".

The Wrecks - Teenage Jive Demo

Punk chicks are awesome. These Reno ladies supplied the track 'Punk Is An Attitude' on 'Not So Quiet'. A good 6 song demo here.

Oh God, I Get Sick Of People's Attitudes

Urban Assault - Demo 1982

More than one band used the Urban Assault moniker. This is the band from South Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

It's Your Problem, Can't You See?

Deadly Reign - System Sucks Demo

Another band that seems lost to the sands of time is Deadly Reign. They contributed the ripping fast 'System Sucks' tune on 'Not So Quiet', one of my faves. I also stumbled upon their 5 song demo. Good hardcore.

Section 8 - Demo '82

I really don't know any info on the band Section 8, other than they wrote my theme song: Fat, Drunk & Stupid. Isn't that enough?!

It's My Life

M.A.D. - Pre-Bl'ast Demo

Mutually Assured Destruction had a great track on 'Not So Quiet', had this five song demo, then became Bl'ast. Another good demo.

What The Fuck Are We Striving For?

Intensified Chaos - Demo 1983

We're going to spend the first weekend of 'Demovember' focusing on bands that were featured on the amazing 1982 release Not So Quiet On The Western Front. To my knowledge the bands I'm posting this weekend never had a "proper" vinyl release. But to be honest my research was incredibly un-thorough. Here's the band that started the comp on side one track one. A good five song assault.

Ronald Reagan, That's Not Freedom

Demovember

That's right, this month is now 'Demovember'. Yes, the Demo Tape. A great 'D.I.Y.' way to get your music out there. To my (incredible lack of) knowledge what I present this month will only be demos that, at least at the time of the original recording, was not properly released on vinyl. There will be some known, some not so known, some bad quality, some re-released, but all good, at least in my opinion. So, let's begin.....
