ANTiSEEN - Eat More Possum

Another month another ANTiSEEN release. This time it's 1994's Eat More Possum. Git some!

Poison Idea - Ian MacKaye

I mentioned at the beginning of the month that we were going heavy this month. Well, there are none more heavy than Poison Idea (literally!). This six song burner from 1989 finds PI at their peak. The album cover, well....

V/A - Nativity In Black: A Tribute To Black Sabbath

So here's another one that might ruffle some feathers around here. We'll see. I don't think anyone can dispute Black Sabbath's place in music history. They practically created 'HEAVY'. Well, here's a mid-90's tribute. Enjoy... or not.

Marilyn Manson - Portrait Of An American Family

OK, let's see how this one is received. Back before Marilyn Manson became platinum selling rock stars they were just a bunch of freaks from Florida. Then in 1993, with the help of Trent Reznor, they released this full length debut. And people began to notice. Like the band or not this is loud, abrasive, and heavy. I think it's a great release. Better grab it now, I have a feeling this one might not last too long.

Dr. Know - Wreckage In Flesh

Boy, I remember when this one came out. Right on the heels of what I consider two classics: Plug In Jesus and This Island Earth. Granted, Dr. Know had hinted at a metal sound on those releases, but wow, did they ever dive in head first with this one. I was so disappointed. But, now listening in retrospect, it's a good album. But I don't think it's a classic. Their Sabbath cover is bad ass, though!

Iron Christ - Self-Titled

OK, today we're back with what we're good at: Blasphemy! Spastic Rats were an awesome, though short-lived Maryland band that released one fantastic 7" found HERE. In the late 80's a couple members became Iron Christ and turned to thrash. I like the results. You decide.

MD.45 - The Craving

Something a little different today. I stumbled upon this one on some blog (sorry, don't remember which one) and it sounded interesting. Apparently Megadoof Dave Mustaine wanted to put together a side project. So, in1996 he grabbed guys from Goldfinger, Suicidal Tendencies and none other than Mr. Lee Ving on vocals. That last one alone had me downloading. So... the music is not horrible. But the lyrics sound suspiciously like he wrote them soon after being born-again (quitter!). I've since learned this was remastered in 2006 WITHOUT Vings vocals. So, there you go.

Tankard - Chemical Invasion

Tankard is a group of German drunks that have been thrashing for around 25 years. Not sure if they've ever been sober. Their tunes certainly suggest they haven't. Here's their second full length, from 1987.

Genöcide - Submit To Genöcide

Genöcide supplied half of the great 1982 'Last Rites' Split with M.I.A. Then, in 1987 they released this. They obviously decided on the metal path musically, but stayed true to their socially unacceptable lyrical content. Certainly not the greatest release of all time, but it does have a certain charm.

At War - Ordered To Kill

On the whole I find the Virginia Beach outfit to be a bit silly. A little too much testosterone. However there's no doubt they bring it heavy. And dammit, it's catchy too!

Venom - Black Metal (Deluxe Edition)

OK, so we discussed Celtic Frost yesterday. But I must say today that I would've never given them a chance had I not been turned on to Venom along the way. Granted, I know the lyrical content is silly but I don't know, there's something about these guys that I really really like. I think they're bad ass. However for some reason I never even tried to listen to any of their stuff after 1985's release, 'Possessed'. Dunno why, just didn't. But here's my favorite Venom release, Black Metal. And it's the 22 track 'Deluxe Edition', because you're worth it!

Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales

While choosing what to post this month I was reminded of a band I liked all those years ago but didn't presently have any of their stuff left. That band is Celtic Frost. Black Metal Gods from Switzerland. I had (and still have for that matter) only heard their foirst couple releases, but dammit I remember loving them. So one quick search later and I found Morbid Tales, their debut. Damn I'm glad I found this again. I knew I liked it but I had forgotten just how powerful this album is. Great stuff, I think. Originally released in 1985, this is 1999 re-issue that contains three extra tracks. Though a bit under-produced, the three bonus tracks shred too.

The Accüsed - Martha Splatterhead's Maddest Stories Ever Told

The Accüsed were an early 80's hardcore band from Seattle. In the mid-80's they got a new singer, Blaine from The Fartz, and "crossed-over", not just to metal, but to their own brand of Splatter Rock. I do like it, but I can't help but feel the vocal style gets a little annoying after a while.

M.O.D. - U.S.A. For M.O.D.

Method Of Destruction were four mooks from NJ that busted out the punk/metal "crossover" thing. Much like their counterpart, S.O.D., M.O.D. deliver heavy, fast, mostly short doses of silly thrash, with liberal doses of political incorrectness.

Stormtroopers Of Death - Speak English Or Die (Platinum Edition)

I'm sure by now most of you know the story of S.O.D. How Anthrax and M.O.D. got together to make a little thrash baby. The results are pretty astounding, really. Fast, funny, and just a little racism. Originally released in 1985, this is the 2000 reissue, or 'Platinum Edition' (whoa!). It includes a couple good outtake tracks as well as some live tracks. It's quite humorous hearing them introduce 'Speak English Or Die' to the Japanese crowd.

Hookers - Black Visions Of Crimson Wisdom

The Hookers describe their music as Heavy Metal Thunder. That's about right. Here's their blast from 1999.

Mentors - You Axed For It!

The Mentors were in full swing by this 1985 release. And they quickly became the darlings of the PMRC. I still remember seeing some pastor reciting the lyrics to 'Golden Showers'. Fucking classic!! By the way, this is the re-issue, which means it has 3 under-produced throw away tracks at the end.

GWAR - Scumdogs Of The Universe

During the early 90's GWAR was pretty much at the top of the punk metal food chain. Ridiculously entertaining stage shows and, by this second release, they actually got some production behind them. Eventually the joke kinda got old, but on this 1990 release they were definitely in their prime.

Bloody Mary - Bitch Need Psychotherapy

I know of virtually nothing about this NC band. I found them quite by accident and I'm damn happy I did. I believe they only had a couple demos in the late 80's/early 90's and a comp CD of those demos in the mid 90's. Here's one of their bad ass demos.

SKATENiGS - What A Mangled Web We Leave

Texas bad asses the SKATENiGS delivered their second and I believe final full length release in 1994. Heavy doses of punk, metal and yes, even rap. If you're interested, here's their first release.

Monster Magnet - Spine Of God

Time to turn on, tune in and drop out. Monster Magnet began in the late 80's, but it's the late 60's/early 70's that they took their sound from. Heavy, drug-fueled sludge from top to bottom. Here's their 1991 full length debut. As the inlay proudly proclaims: It's A Satanic Drug Thing... You Wouldn't Understand.

Suicidal Tendencies - Controlled By Hatred/Feel Like Shit... Deja Vu

Suicidal Tendencies were another band that started out hardcore heavyweights and progressed into metal gods (really, Doc?!?). ST's second release showed signs of "crossing over". By 1989 the move was pretty much complete. Opting for a really heavy sound. Personally, I think it works great.

D.R.I. - Crossover

The way I remember it, back in the day if you were punk you were punk. If you were metal you were metal. And both camps didn't usually play nice. Then, some time around the mid 80's the lines started to merge a little. Then, in 1987, hardcore gods D.R.I. just said to hell with it and put a label on it. It took me a while to come around to the 'punk metal' thing, but I finally made it.

Motörhead - No Remorse

We're deep in the dog days of summer now, so I've decided August should be dedicated to Hard & Heavy. Why not? And if hard & heavy is how we're rollin', let's start at the top. I present Motörhead. I'm guessing this isn't going to be new to many of you, but I fully think they belong here. This is their compilation originally released in 1984. Tho I still have the leather-covered copy I present here the Deluxe reissue that has a few bonus tracks. I have a feeling this won't last long, so get it while you can.
