Mighty Sphincter - Ghost Walking Double E.P.

Let's end the year on a weird note. The Mighty Sphincter came from Phoenix, AZ. They began with a great, crazy hardcore sound, but evolved into a bizarre goth band. The double E.P., released in 1985, kinda shows both sides of the coin. Hence, the title. The first side is loud, weird punk. The second, after kicking out the original vocalist, is more loud, weird goth. Huh?

Mentors - Get Up And Die

A blog just isn't a blog without the Mentors! Here's their debut E.P. from 1982, reissued in '87 with a bonus 7". 'Rape Rock' at it's finest!

Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em, It's A Gas

The Meatmen - Crippled Children Suck 7"

Tesco Vee and the Mighty Men of Meat. Tesco kept a revolving door throughout their original run from 1981-97. After that Tesco formed the Hate Police, a much 'heavier' version of the Meatmen. Finally, in 2008 Tesco re-formed the Meatmen to record and tour. I saw them a few months ago and they blew my mind. One of the best rock 'n' roll shows I've ever seen. Here's their second 7" from 1983.

Subhumans - The Day The Country Died

The (U.K.) Subhumans were another one of my absolute favorite bands way back when. They originally formed in 1980 and released a flurry of classic U.K. hardcore between '81-'84. They originally broke up in 1985 but released two more L.P.'s which showed a slower and a far more musically competent sound. Dick, the vocalist, and Trotsky, the drummer, went on to form Citizen Fish. The Subhumans resurfaced from time to time in the nineties and came back seemingly for good with a new release in 2007 and subsequent tours. I was lucky enough to see them a couple years ago and they put on a great show. Brought back tons of memories. This is their 1983 full length debut.

It's 1984 And It's All Gone Dead

Discharge - Fight Back 7"

One of the all time classic hardcore records. In the early 80's Discharge put out some fantastic, aggressive hardcore. As the decade progressed the band began slowing down, Cal changed his vocal style and they basically became just another crossover band. This is their debut from 1980 and it kicks serious ass!

Chaotic Dischord - Never Trust A Friend 7"

Chaotic Dischord was a 'joke' band from the U.K. that ended up releasing quite a lot. Members of Vice Squad and their road crew got together to record a couple songs for a compilation, aiming to bash out a noisy and offensive hardcore parody. The songs were actually popular and they gained a following. They went on to release several loud and obnoxious 7"s and L.P.'s before disbanding in 1988. This is their second 7", released in 1983.

Scream - Still Screaming

Another Dischord band here. Scream started in Northern Virginia/D.C. in 1980. This is their debut L.P. from 1983. They had a great sound here that combined early hardcore with some reggae beats. They continued to release albums until their break up in 1990, but this is the only one I've heard. It is a classic, tho.

Who Knows? Who Cares? Why Bother?

7Seconds - The Crew

7Seconds seem to have been around forever. Starting in Reno, NV in 1980 they've been going strong ever since. All the while mainly staying true to their hardcore roots. Fast and melodic and always with a positive message. This is their first full length release from 1984.

Stretch Marks - Who's In Charge? 7"

Don't know alot about this band. They were from Winnepeg and they liked wrestling. I believe all they released, other than comp tracks, were this 7" in '83 and a 12" E.P. in '84. Good hardcore the way it was meant to be played.

I Just Wanna Be A Professional Punk(fixed)

S.N.F.U. - ...And No One Else Wanted To Play

Well, since it's Boxing Day (?) I'll throw out a couple Canadian bands. Here's S.N.F.U. from Edmonton. They've got quite a large body of work, releasing new stuff every couple of years from 1985-2004. I've actually only heard their first two records, this album (their debut) and their 2nd L.P. Both are good, melodic hardcore.

Happy Birthday Baby Jesus!

Merry Christmas on and all! Here's a few classic records celebrating the birth of our fictional Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Feederz - Jesus 7"

An all-time classic obnoxious song from an all-time classic obnoxious band. The Feederz hailed from Phoenix, AZ and put out several rude records throughout their on again off again career. Pure venom, and alot of fun.

I Hate Him And I Want Him Dead

Fear - Fuck Christmas 7"

Another rude band with another rude Christmas song. Side B is not so rude. It's the same song, only censored.

Don't Despair Just Because It's Christmas

Ludichrist - Immaculate Deception
Ludichrist was a hardcore band from New York. Rather than play the typical combat boot stompin' NYHC they opted for a bit of a metal edge. They released two L.P.'s before morphing into the punk/metal/humor band Scatterbrain.

Most People Are Dicks

Dr. Know - Plug-In Jesus
Another Nardcore band. Dr. Know released several masterpieces during their original run (1981-1986) before crossing over to a metal sound. for a 1988 release. This is one of my absolute favorite records. Damn damn good stuff. You just can't find much better than 'Life Returns'. They were primarily inactive during the 90's but resurfaced to re-release some old stuff as well as record some new stuff throughout the aughts. Their last release, 'Killing For God', was in 2008.

F.U.'s - Kill For Christ

The F.U.'s were one of the great Boston hardcore bands of the early 80's. They released two E.P.'s and and an L.P. before moving towards a more metal sound and changing their names to the Straw Dogs in 1986. Here's their debut E.P. from 1982.

This Is Not A Test Of The Emergency Broadcast System

45 Grave - Black Cross 7"

45 Grave was one of the first punk bands to play 'goth punk'. They started in L.A. in 1979. The  tunes are decent punk rock with dark and horror flick lyrics. I love the vocals from punk goddes Dinah Cancer. One of my favorites. This is their debut single from 1981.

The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette

As the last post mentioned, the Grinch hates all the NOISE NOISE NOISE! That happens to be one of my favorite songs on this classic Damned L.P. Yeah, it's a stretch but what the hell...it's Christmas. Enjoy.

Noise Is For Heroes
fixed!

Flipper - Album: Generic Flipper

'Tis the season, they say. So in that spirit I thought it fitting to post this Flipper L.P. and dedicate it to the Grinch. Since he complained about All the NOISE NOISE NOISE! this slab of vinyl would really send him over the edge. These guys did some major league bang-clanging in their time. This is an absolute noisy masterpiece!

Psycho - 6 Song E.P.-Son Of 8 Song E.P. 7"

I really liked this 7" but never knew anything about the band, so I went searching for info. Here's what I found on their Facebook page:

Psycho started as a punk band with pop overtones but were strongly influenced by the burgeoning hardcore scene and eventually became a strictly hardcore band. They were at their best during the transition, adding hardcore energy to their pop punk melodies. During this period, they released the first and best of their records, imaginatively called "8-Song EP." It was recorded at Radiobeat Studios and released in 1983 on their own Ax/ction Records.
"Kids Are For Trix," a song penned by Normal about a jaded pimp hustling child prostitutes, became a minor college radio hit. It earned the band a slot at WBCN's Rock and Roll Rumble in 1983. The winner that year was 'Til Tuesday.
Unhappy with the new direction, singer Mick Keddy left the band in early 1984 and was briefly replaced by Joe Glassman who was shortly thereafter replaced by Mega (full name, Wayne Megerdichian). At about the same time, drummer Denny Disorder left to make money playing traditional Irish music. He was replaced by Charlie Infection who also played in Cancerous Growth and the two bands often toured together. Psycho turned significantly more hardcore with this lineup and they put out "6-Song EP, Son of 8-Song EP" in 1985 and the full-length "Hosebags From Hell" LP in 1986.

My Baby's Got P.M.S.(fixed)

T.S.O.L. - Dance With Me

True Sounds Of Liberty formed in Long Beach, CA in 1978. They started with a punk/hardcore sound, but slowly ventured through a more 'goth' sound, to an 'art punk' sound to more metal or rock. Dance With Me, released in 1981 has a more goth feel to it, but I think it's a damn fine record.

Mau Mau's - Society's Rejects 7"

The Mau Mau's played abrasive hardcore from the U.K. They released five 7"s and two L.P.'s between 1982 and 1985. This is their debut 7" and is an angry blast of hardcore.

We're Society's Rejects

Killroy - Believe In The Ruins

Killroy, from Hollywood,  was around in the mid 80'. Don't know alot about them. They released a 7" in 1983 and this 12" in 1985. I prefer this one between the two. Melodic hardcore. they got back together recently and recorded a new CD which includes new stuff plus several of their old songs re-recorded. A great idea that I wish more bands would do.

It Must've Been My Last Resort

Iron Cross - Skinhead Glory 7"

Another classic and important hardcore record. Iron Cross formed in the early 80's and were a part of the D.C. Dischord family, although they never fit that mold. They were one of, if not the first American Oi! band. They also championed 'Skinhead Pride', but not Nazi politics or racism. Their music is slower and heavier than hardcore of the time, but no less aggressive. After many lineup changes and 2 E.P.'s they called it quits in 1985. Lead singer Sab Grey has reformed a new Iron Cross. They've toured and also released a split with a Sab-fronted rockabilly band Sab Grey & The Royal Americans.

Fight 'Em, Fight 'Em, Fight 'Em All

Adrenalin O.D. - The Wacky Hijinks Of A.O.D.

Another fun New Jersey band here. A.O.D. originally formed in 1981 and released fast and funny music throughout the 80's. This is their first full-length from 1984. Sense of humor aside, this is a damn good hardcore record.

Angry Samoans - Back From Samoa

Here's one of the first punk albums I actually owned. Not the first, but one of the early ones. I remember seeing an ad in CREEM magazine for it (guitarist Gregg Turner wrote for it at the time). It was a hilarious ad so I searched it out, found a copy and loved it after the first listen. Short, rude and hilarious songs most of which are punk rock classics. It's just as good today as it was 30 friggin years ago! Original Samoans Metal Mike and Bill Vockeroth still play shows occasionally. I had the fortune of seeing them last year. The played a fantastic set which brought back tons of memories. (sniff, sniff, dammit i promised myself I wouldn't cry!)

Lost Generation - Never Work 7"

This is the first hardcore record that I remember hearing. My brother had borrowed a cassette with this, MDC's debut and I think Void. M.D.C. became one of my all time favorite bands soon after, but the Lost Gen 7" never actually made it into my collection. The great title track forever stuck in my mind as did the tune which at the time i thought was the greatest cover song of all time, L.S.D. I was finally able to track it down online and so I present it here to you.

Hüsker Dü - Land Speed Record

A great record from a very important band. Hüsker Dü originally started in 1979. They released some good hardcore/punk and slowly moved more towards rock and alternative as the 80's passed. You can't beat this L.P. for full on raw aggression. Great stuff.

All Tensed Up

Nip Drivers - Destroy Whitey + Oh Blessed Freak Show

The Nip Drivers were a fantastic hardcore band from California. The music is tight and (mostly) fast. Lyrically, they didn't take themselves too seriously, which is always best I think. They released a couple 12"s in the mid 80's and a couple 7"s in the 90's. I couldn't decide which of their first two records to post here so I opted for their 2000 re-release CD which has both as well as a kick ass cover of 'Fox On The Run' from the 'Desperate Teenage Lovedolls' movie. Great!

The Boat People - Capitalist 7"

Here's a single from a band I know nothing about. Two songs of minimalist punk. That's all.

(fixed)
You're A Capitalist To The Core

Government Issue - Boycott Stabb

D.C. stalwarts Government Issue have an incredible body of work. They released many L.P.'s and 7"s between 1980 & 1989. The early stuff being a great representation of harD.C.ore and as the years passed they got more musical and met the D.C. post-punk sound head on. They broke up in 1989, but in 2000-01 the released the Complete History. A great 4 disc collection that should be owned by all. I couldn't decide which early release was my favorite to post here. It was either 1983's Make An Effort 7" or the Boycott Stabb E.P. from the same year. Obviously Boycott Stabb won out.

Mental Abuse - Streets Of Filth

Another one of my favorite 'scenes' was New Jersey. Some great bands came from the New York suburb. Mental Abuse was one of those bands. They never seemed to get much recognition and only released one L.P. This one, from 1983. Good hardcore with mostly humorous lyrics.

I Think Your Fucking Head Is Loose

Ill Repute - Oxnard: Land Of No Toilets 7"

Ill Repute came from the vibrant Oxnard, CA hardcore scene. Nardcore at it's finest. They originally got together in 1981. This is their first release, from 1983. They continued to release stuff thru their original break-up in 2004. But they're now back together playing shows. This is a great hardcore, excuse me...NARDCORE, 7".

Fuck With My Head

Killer Pussy - Bikini Wax

Killer Pussy was a short-lived punk/new wave band from Phoenix, AZ. They only released a couple records between 1982-82 as well as appearing on the classic Phoenix compilation 'Amuck'. Surprisingly, a band named Killer Pussy has lyrics full of humor and sexual innuendo.

Momma's Little Angel Plays Pocket Pool

Ugly Americans - The Dream Turns Sour

Ugly Americans were a hardcore band from Durham, N.C. They released two albums an a 7" between 1984 and 1986. Basic mid-80's hardcore. No surprises, but good stuff

X - Adult Books 7"

Another legendary punk band here. They released some great and influential music during their long career. Here's their debut single from 1978

We're Desperate, Get Used To It

The Dickies - Stukas Over Disneyland

Everyone loves the Dickies! Originally formed in L.A. all the way back in 1977, They've released many great albums. This is one of my favorites, from 1983. Some great Dickies classics on here like 'She's A Hunchback', 'Pretty Please Me' and 'If Stuart Could Talk'.

I'm O.K., You're O.K.

Honor Role - It Bled Like A Stuck Pig 7"

Don't know much about this Richmond, VA hardcore band. Basic hardcore with mostly humorous lyrics.

I'm A Nerd

Special Forces - World Domination

Good, fast, in-your-face hardcore from this Berkeley, CA band. Special Forces released 3 records between 1984 & 1991. This is their debut.

Legal Weapon - Your Weapon

This is a great punk rock record. Legal Weapon was from southern California. They released 9 albums between 1981 & 2002. Great, energetic tunes with fantastic vocals. If you haven't heard them give this a try.

I Got My Equalizer

Clitboys - We Don't Play The Game 7"

Don't know much about these guys. Pretty basic hardcore with mainly political or socially conscious lyrics. I believe this is their only official release, from 1983.

Peter & The Test Tube Babies - The Loud, Blaring Punk Rock L.P.

Another fun punk rock L.P. In fact, this is loud and blaring as well. It says so right there in the title. For those of you that don't know, Peter and the T.T.B.'s are an English band originally formed in 1978. Their first proper release was in 1982. This baby, my favorite and I think by far their best, was released in 1984. They released music throughout the 80's & 90's, veering more towards rock than punk as the years went by. Their last release was in 2005 although they are still touring and playing shows.

We're Too Drunk To Play Rock 'N' Roll(fixed)

The Fiends - We've Come For Your Beer

The Fiends (or at least THIS The Fiends) threw out some fun and ridiculous punk rock in the mid 80's. They were from California, but unfortunately I am unable to find much more info than that. They released this L.P. in 1984 and followed it up in 1986 with the L.P. 'Gynecology', which is equally silly if a little more rock 'n' roll. Lots of fun.

Descendents - Fat E.P.

The Descendents originally got together in 1978, but it was after picking up Milo on vocals that they really started recording some of their classic hardcore tunes. This was the first release with Milo singing, from 1981.

I Like Food, Food Tastes Good

Condemned 2 Death - Diary Of A Love Monster

Condemned 2 Death was another one of the infamous San Francisco 'Vat Bands' of the early 80's. They released a 7" and this 12" E.P. in the couple years they were together. The 7" is a great piece of hardcore history, but for some unexplained reason I like this release better. A slower, more sluggish metal sound compared to the 7". The lyrics are tongue-in-cheek metal anthems. Regardless, 'What's In The Basement' kicks ass! A great CD containing both records as well as demo and live stuff was released in 2002. Well worth the price of admission.

Is This Sunny California Or Edgar Allan Poe?

P.T.L Klub - 13 Commandments

P.T.L Klub was among the 2nd wave of Boston hardcore. They were around from '84-'88. Ripping fast, angry hardcore. This is their debut from '85. They released a couple more E.P.'s before splitting. Their complete discography was released on CD in 2008.

Join The P.T.L Or You Will Rot In Hell(fixed)

Dayglo Abortions - Feed Us A Fetus

Dayglo Abortions hail from Victoria, B.C. Formed in 1979 they released their first L.P. in 1981. This is their second release, from 1986. Their music teeters between punk and metal and their lyrics have usually an offensive sense of humor. They've released 8 or 9 L.P.'s, the last in 2004, however they are still touring.

Misguided - Bringing It Down... 7"

The Misguided was an often overlooked early New York Hardcore band. They released two 7"s during their time, between 1981 - 1984. This was the first. Hard, fast and angry! They've also released a 'career retrospective' which contains both 7"s plus demo and live stuff.

You Bore Me

Gray Matter - Food For Thought

Sometime in the mid-80's the D.C. scene began to usher in the 'post-hardcore' sound. Generally slower, more melodic tunes. This is Gray Matter's first release, from 1984.

M.D.C. - Millions Of Dead Cops

This is 20 minutes of of some of the greatest hardcore ever. Driving fast beats with intelligent lyrics. They're still going strong and sounding great. This, their debut, should be required listening.

What Makes America So Straight And Me So Bent

J.F.A. - Blatant Localism 7"

Here's the debut 7" from Phoenix's legendary skate punks, Jodie Foster's Army. A great record from 1981.
